Marking up on the bench
The nineties
From sign making to mirrors
Back in the 90’s whilst I was working for a sign company, I met an interesting mirror and glass artist/designer. His use of sand blasting techniques on mirrors and glass fascinated me. This got me thinking: maybe I could blend my sheet metal fabrication background with mirrored glass to create a mirror frame constructed from industrial bright steel. I blued and purpled the material by heating it with an oxy/acetylene welding torch.
The reaction I received about this piece got me thinking I’ve really got something unique here. I then began designing different mirror frame designs using other materials like MDF, which is very versatile. The innovative designs needed something to set them apart from the others, so I started experimenting with various coatings and finishes to make them different from each other.
